Preserving Iconic Heritage at the University of Liverpool
Case Study:
Scaffolding the University of Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery – Preserving Heritage with Minimal Disruption

Merseyside Scaffolding was selected to scaffold the Victoria Gallery and Museum at the University of Liverpool, a Grade II listed** building originally constructed in 1889 and is credited as ‘The original Redbrick’. The project involved replacing the roof, which had reached the end of its lifespan, while maintaining the gallery’s day-to-day operations and protecting the building’s historic character.
Challenges and Solutions

The key challenge was working around the high foot traffic from students, staff, and visitors, with thousands passing through the gallery each week. The project required scaffolding to be erected around the entire main tower and roof structure, with careful attention to preserving the iconic red-brick aesthetic of the building.
To minimise disruption, weekend work was scheduled for key phases of the scaffolding installation, particularly around the main entrance, ensuring continued public access during the week. This approach allowed Merseyside Scaffolding to maintain efficiency while respecting the university’s busy environment.
Additionally, the scaffolding was wrapped with branded mesh to showcase a visual representation of the gallery, maintaining the building’s appearance during the renovation and highlighting its historic significance.

Outcome

The project was completed smoothly and on time, with minimal impact on daily activities at the gallery. The roof replacement proceeded safely, and the scaffolding design successfully balanced functional needs with the aesthetic demands of working on a historic landmark. By working flexibly around the university’s operations, Merseyside Scaffolding ensured the gallery remained accessible while preserving its iconic status.
